Press Reviews

San Francisco Chronicle (April 23)

“Straus begins by proclaiming “I am a farmer’s daughter and it’s all because of Hitler.”

Best of SF Bay Area (April 2014) – “A Clever, Quick-Moving Comedy with Cheese and Kvetching”

“(Straus’) wry observations contrasting bulls, heifers, and dating are outrageous, and the audience has a great time with her energy.”

San Francisco Examiner (April 17) – “Fresh tales of love from dairy farm girl”

“When I can’t figure out what to do, I ask myself how a cow would do it,” writer-performer Vivien Straus declares.

Bolinas Hearsay News (April 14) – Confessions with a side of cheese

“Vivien romps all over the stage, like the bovine creatures she’s grown up with on the farm and from whom she draws parallels to the human behaviors she encounters in the larger world.”

J Weekly (April 3) — “Of Cows and Men”

“Although young Jews becoming farmers doesn’t raise any eyebrows today, it wasn’t always that way. ‘(Being Jewish farmers) felt like the most unhip, stupid and backwards thing,’ said Straus. But,’there are a lot of cow facts in E-i-E-i-OY!'”

J Weekly (April 2013) — “Home on the Ranch”

“For someone who grew up dreaming of the day she could live on a street with sidewalks — a place where she could wear pretty shoes meant for girls, instead of thick boots for tromping around in hay and manure — Vivien Straus sure seems happy here on her farm.”

Pt. Reyes Light (April 2) — “Straus on Love & Agriculture”

“This is hilarious … you can’t make this shit up.”

Marin IJ (March 27)  — “Sex, Dysfunction and Cheese”

“Bill — the patriarch of what would become the Straus dairy empire — loved to give his children advice. In fact, his daughter says, he had an opinion about just about everything. But she may have misunderstood her father’s advice on how to find a husband.”

SFGate.com (April 2) — “4 Don’t Miss Bay Area Performances”

“Organic performer Vivien Straus herds Jerseys, jerks and Jews in her one-woman autobiographical comic tale.”

Southern Sonoma Country Life (February 3)  — “New Play by Sustainable Food Personality”

“You can take the girl away from the country but you can’t take the country away from the girl! To prove the point, Vivien Straus, former marketing director for her family’s fabled Straus Family Creamery for over a decade, might have been the veritable Dairy princess, but she also dedicated a good 20 years or so, treading the boards as an actor in Los Angeles.”

KQED Bay Area Bites (March 12) — “The 85% True Story of Vivien Straus”

“Ever wonder what it would have been like to grow up on the Straus family farm? Or, what that experience might look performed as a one-woman show — with cheese? Then you definitely won’t want to miss …”

Audience Reviews

“E-I-EI-OY is an original spicy comedy by actress/playwright Vivien Straus who has just returned to acting following some time doing PR for the family business. Can a girl who grows up on a dairy farm in a tiny Marin County farming community find true fulfillment as a “real, liberated woman” by moving to San Francisco? Presented as autobiographical, Vivien’s one-woman-show focuses on what happens when she has her very first sexual romantic relationship. While she and her Russian-born boyfriend have no difficulty hitting it off just fine in the bedroom, their day to day relationship becomes increasingly problematical, due -at least in part – to rather significant communication difficulties. Vivien Straus’s clever, bawdy and at times touching story is not to be missed!”

— Irene Hartzell

“The professional yet intimate portrait painted by Vivien Straus in her one-woman play is both funny and moving, keeping her audience engaged throughout. The show is well wrought and touches upon the entire scale of emotions – from light-hearted, laugh out loud to heartbreaking. Well worth it – entertaining, smart and thoroughly enjoyable. Don’t miss it!”

— Dan German, San Francisco

“Hysterical, yet touching story of one women’s quest to free herself from the wrong man. Great acting and storytelling!”

— Allison Quaid, Mill Valley

“Great showcase for the talented Vivien Straus, who commands the stage and the multiple characters she plays in this clever one-woman show.”

— Jayli

“Loved the show! Vivien makes us laugh but also exposes a difficult time she experienced as a young woman making her way in the world. Hysterical look at family life, living in the 70s and the life of cows. Highly recommend it!”

— David Rosnow, Walnut Creek

“UDDERLY DELIGHTFUL! Vivien Straus grew up with a colorful family life, and she milks it for all it’s worth. Highly recommend this charming, original, and very funny performance.”

— Laurel and Tony Gilbert, Fort Klamath, OR

“You’ll feel like you’ve been around the famous kitchen table! The writing is lively and Vivien’s terrific, capturing her 20-something self with esprit and insight. Lithe and funny. Entertaining and enlightening. How did all those characters (and cows!) fit into that tiny theater? West Marin meets the Mission. See this if you possibly can.”

— Helaine Kaplan Prentice

“A fabulous night! Theater at its best!! Highly recommended!!!!!”

— Meital Golan, Campbell, CA

“We very much enjoyed your performance … the yellow umbrella, the cow behavior markers, the sound effects.”

— Sally Gale, Petaluma

“Vivian’s exhuberant personality poured out in her funny and infuriarting play. She so involved the audience that we wanted to get up from our seats to give her advice. The sound effects were perfect, the simple set really appropriate, and Vivian’s portrayals of her many characters gave you insight into their personalities. We loved every minute.”

— Myrab

“E-i-E-i-OY! In Bed With the Farmer’s Daughter, is in turns, funny, poignant, and cringeworthy. But it’s mostly funny. Vivien’s comedic timing is flawless as she invites the audience along with her on the tale of a naive farm girl trying to make her way in the big city, and a man who came for dinner one night, and didn’t leave for five years. Her portrayal of Bolley, her Czechoslovakian boyfriend/rash-that-wouldn’t-go-away, is pitch-perfect. As she tells the story of a series of bad decisions, all inspired by a desire to please her father, the audience laughs with her at first, then ends up laughing at her. We think she’s learned her lesson, then cringe as she makes the same mistakes again. “I know,” she says directly to the audience at one point, “You want to slap me right now.” And we do want to slap her. But we also love her, and want to save her from herself. However, we know, and in the end she learns, that only she can do that.

Vivien seamlessly and impressively morphs into over a dozen believable characters with several different accents during the one-hour performance. During a scene at a family gathering, the audience watches her transform into five characters in quick succession.
Throughout the performance Vivien drops delightful tidbits of wisdomgleaned from the cows she grew up around on her father’s dairy in Marin. The writing is tight, the acting spot on, and the story funny and memorable. We found ourselves laughing again and again on the drive home as we remembered our favorite parts. Highly recommended!”

PRESS RELEASE

E-I-E-I-OY! – ORGANIC ACTRESS VIVIEN STRAUS BRINGS TOGETHER JERSEYS, JERKS AND JEWS IN HER ONE-WOMAN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL COMEDY IN SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco (March 4, 2014) – Actress Vivien Straus, perhaps best known for her award-winning performance as Marketing VP on behalf of the Bay Area’s organic Straus Family Creamery, is now betting the farm on her new theatrical show, “E-i-E-i-OY! – In Bed with the Farmer’s Daughter,” opening April 4th in San Francisco.

The one-woman autobiographical show recounts Straus’ search for love in 1970s, after moving from her family’s rural dairy in West Marin to urban San Francisco to launch her acting career.

Thanks to Straus’ ongoing deep ties with the sustainable farming community, including having created the New York Times-lauded CheeseTrail.org mobile app, every performance will be followed by a complementary artisan cheese reception. Featured cheese makers include Cowgirl Creamery, Point Reyes Farmstead and Marin French.

In her coming-of-age story, Straus blends farm trivia with a mad-cap portrayal of 15 different characters, including her German Jewish immigrant father who gruffly offers cryptic relationship advice: “To find a husband, he must have sparkling eyes and a deep soul,” and “Boleslav” the Czech political refugee who she meets one drunken evening.

Straus’ film, television and stage acting credits include “Thirteen Days,” “Heaven and Earth,” “Peggy Sue got Married,” “One Good Cop,” the television series “Freddy’s Nightmares” (in which Straus died … twice), and the New York comedy group, “BOB.” She performed a previous incarnation of E-i-E-i-OY! to standing-room-only crowds at the San Francisco Fringe Festival in 2002.

E-i-E-i-OY! runs April 4 – May 10 (Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm) at NOHSpace theater, 2840 Mariposa Street in San Francisco’s Mission district, with an additional benefit performance in June in Point Reyes Station. Tickets for the show –which runs about one hour– cost $20, and can be purchased here.
